This adaptive reuse project transformed a former F.W. Parsley’s gas station into the hub of a community. With a design inspired by the age-old tradition of gathering on a front porch, it houses the Bon Secours Center for Healthy Living Sarah Garland Jones Center, a 5,000-SF health- and wellness-oriented community resource. The space includes a café, numerous meeting and training rooms, and a fully functioning community kitchen. Existing garage-style doors were preserved and repurposed, allowing the entire space to open from end-to-end. Other outdoor elements such as cedar shake, barn lights and wooden banisters add to the rustic outdoor vibe. The Center’s location across the street from Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital supports the Center’s aim at improving the health and livelihood of local residents living in the surrounding neighborhoods.
